Metal Working Job Shop Providing Components
To Garage Door Manufacturers And Installers

INDUSTRY OVERVIEW

Sales of garage doors and components are directly related to the strength and health of the overall residential construction industry. When that industry is growing, the suppliers and vendors to the contractors that work in the construction industry are successful.

COMPANY PERSPECTIVE

Production at Minnesota Metals is impacted by how well the home builders and remodelers are doing in various parts of the country. Weather conditions can have a significant impact on short-term business operations. In extremely rainy periods, the builders can not work, so the related building components, such as garage doors and the installation items, are not in demand. However, after major weather events, including tornadoes and hurricanes, the demand for parts increases as rebuilding takes place.

COMPANY ISSUES/CONCERNS

When Gwen Stier became owner of Minnesota Metals she focused on several specific areas that needed improvement including employee productivity and programs, budgeting, production planning, plus effective space utilization.

SOLUTIONS

George S. May International Company consultants helped Minnesota Metals implement a variety of specific policies and procedures that are solving the key issues facing the company.

"I'm very satisfied with the projects that the consultants implemented," said Gwen Stiers. "These procedures help my employees understand their jobs and improve the overall operation of the company."

An employee incentive program was developed and begun with specific goals for all employees. This will help the productivity, as well as encourage good job habits. A handbook for employees was prepared and is in use to provide specific information about benefits and other common issues. Procedures were put into place to allow for better budgeting and production planning. This takes into account the up-and-down cycles of the business.

In addition, production and efficiency issues were solved by redesigning the supply area and loading dock area as well as assigning specific duties to employees.
